6 June duration of convection note Ken Davis Hypothesis from IHOP: Convection persists longer into the afternoon after cold fronts pass. Seems to be the case from the observations(?). This may be due to the land surface being warm from previous warm days. It takes longer to cool down than the air, so immediately after a front the warm land surface keeps convection running longer into the afternoon. After a few warm days, the land has warmed up and convection shuts down earlier in the afternoon since the land-atmosphere temperature difference reaches ~0 earlier in the day. I don't know if I believe this, since the heat capacity of dry land isn't great (wet land?), but the 6 June mission (King Air and Falcon) intended to extend their flights into the early evening to watch the ABL collapse, and this didn't happen by the time they quit (around 18 CDT I think). Other missions (warmer days) saw convection quit earlier (word of mouth).
